Oddments
* I've broken my own rule about writing the first draft all the way through, and gone back and revised a section of The Mirror of Yu-Huang. Because it wasn't working. Because Megan wasn't acting like herself, and it felt all wrong. There were things going on that made no sense, and the whole thing felt all...floaty.  The first third of the book works. Works like gangbusters. Seriously, I LOVE the first bits of the book. Then there was this...thing...that happened, and it went all pear-shaped.  I think I just wasn't tuned in to what Megan is feeling, and she was kind of being all schizophrenic on me. Not to insult anyone actually suffering from the disease; she was just happy one minute and completely miserable the next with no real reason for the transition. She's going to have plenty of reason to be miserable later, so I think it was just too early for this much angst.

I can't go any further until I fix this mess. I've gotten part of it fixed, and I think I found a way to fix the rest, and then I'll be on my merry way to the end.

* Fifth graders are easily impressed. These poor students - all of their teachers were out yesterday at a conference, and all three teachers left videos for the afternoon classes. AND it was POURING rain all day, so they were stuck inside. By 3 pm, they were little rubber students, bouncing off the walls. But they were nice kids, and pretty good (although loud at Four Corners), so I gave them each a bookmark. One of MY bookmarks. I gave the girls CoZ, and the boys Wizard Academies. I figured the boys didn't want pink flying horses.

Uh-uh. They figured out they were MY books, and then everyone wanted the pink flying horses. And me to sign them. They were awe-struck. Like I said, fifth graders are easily impressed. LOL.

*Amanda from Huntress Reviews read THE CROWN OF ZEUS. You can read the review here. Oh, and if you have a Kindle, CROWN is available as a Kindle edition as well as all the formats available at My Bookstore and More.

*I'm now in love with the Cybook. Reads Mobipocket, and is $50 cheaper than a Kindle. It's not wireless, so no instant upload and no Wikipedia, but, yanno, I think I can live without it. My bookshelves demand I purchase an e-book reader at some point, and this one looks pretty good for the price.

*Now my ANKH bookmarks are here, and I can finish up the prize pack I owe someone. I'm all set for this weekend, and it's only Tuesday!

I promised happier things, right?

Okay, so, happy stuff.

I LOVE my Mother's Day present! My new phone is so neat, and while I was never a fan of the camera phone, since you can't really get a phone without one, it's not so bad. I bought myself a ringtone too - "You can't stop the beat" from Hairspray. I love that show/movie. I'll be buying a Harry Potter ringtone too, I think. Just to change it up a bit. They guy at the phone store saw my old one and laughed. He asked if it worked. Of course it still works, I take good care of my phone.

I especially like that I can get the weather on the phone. And I got an earpiece, so I can finally drive and talk hands-free. I don't do it all the time, but it's convenient.

Edits - DONE! Off to the Final Line Editor (or copyeditor), where she can mark the manuscript up with all the grammatical mistakes and typos we missed :)

Cover art - APPROVED! (Good thing, too, because Vistaprint was having another 100 postcards for free sale, so I made up some promo stuff for the Philadelphia Book Festival this weekend and used the art. :) )

Wanna see? It's totally awesome!

Extra props to the first person who can tell me what other series this cover reminds me of. Hint - not so much the subject, but the style. Both the editor and I agree it reminds us of a cover from this well-known series.

Okay, I'll throw in some AoI promo stuff. First person to get it right gets a signed coverflat!

In which the fertilizer collides with the air circulation device
I'm not avoiding you all. I know it's been a long time between posts, but I just wasn't ready to post yet. Last week we got some really tough news, and I've been dealing with the impact. We took Othello back to the vet's last week, because his eye wasn't getting any better, so they were going to do exploratory surgery, to see if there wasn't something in there.

There wasn't. There was no reason for the swelling. So they took a biopsy and sent it to the lab. And, unfortunately, our dear, sweet, lovable pup has lymphoma. Overall, he's doing well, but the vet said he's probably got about two months left., but that's their standard timeline from diagnosis. Could be more, or less. We had the choice for chemo, but we decided not to. It's just not in our budget, and while that sounds terrible, ultimately this disease is incurable. If it was a single tumor we could have surgically removed, we might have gone through with it. He's eight years old already, and gone through so much, we don't want to put him through this too.

He's on daily steriods, and the eye is going back down, and he's acting perfectly normal. We know it's temporary, but we're going to do the best we can and love him up while we've got him. I cried a lot last week, and we haven't really told Ry yet. He's the kind of kid that will worry about it every day, and I want him to love the dog while he's able.

I'll post more later today, after work. Happier things, I promise.

Huge Sigh of Relief
I survived. The semester is over, and I think I did pretty well. The exams were exactly as I knew they would be, except that my computer exam was actually not, so I spent four hours handwriting over 2,000 words in essays for two subjects.

And today I cleaned off the table/desk from all the semester pile-up. Threw away class schedules and old journal articles and got it all prepped for next semster, which doesn't start for another three glorious weeks.  Time to finish up the second round edits on ANKH, and decide on promo for it for July which will be here all too soon, and catch up on reading and book reviews and maybe even get some writing in. Oh, and go over my slides for my school visit in June.

Next semester I'm taking American Women Writers since 1900 and...Intro to Creative Writing. Yeah, I know, you're wondering why in the WORLD I'm taking that class. Not because I want an easy A, as nothing is guaranteed, but because I want fresh perspective. I've never actually TAKEN a creative writing course; everything I've learned has been on-the-job, as it were. And the professor, who I chose by mere chance, is actually a genre writer, so I won't have to worry about that literary professor-writer wannabe looking down his nose at my genre writing. AND the course includes screenwriting, which I've never done but would like to learn.

For now, I'll enjoy my break.

Mother's Day and Other Stuff
Yesterday I finally did get some clothes. Kohls rules. I mean, I LIKE Target for most things, and their prices can't compare. But not for MY clothes. They just don't have it. So I went to Kohls. New shorts, a new pair of capris for work, new bathing suit. Yes, this girl puts her big 'ol butt in a bathing suit. I wanna swim, darn it, and I don't care who says what. I also got... a hat. A cool, yellow, totally floppy, totally cool hat to keep the sun off my face. I will put the hat on and take a picture later.

I think we've decided that my Mother's Day gift this year will be a new cell phone. I haven't had a new one in over five years. Since we first switched to Nextel. Remember the plain black flip phones that everyone had with Nextel? Yeah. Seriously. I still have a green screen with black text. It's time for me to have a new one.

I finished the copyediting, and just in time for my second round edits to arrive. Those'll be done this week, after final. Which are tomorrow. Neither promise to be difficult, but they're both essay tests, which will take time. Ick. At least one is on computer, which means I won't have hand spasms. Today will be spent in promo, hanging out at the Samhain Cafe, the yahoo loop for SP readers and authors. Five of SP's YA authors will be chatting, giving excerpts, playing games, and giving away stuff. There's still time to join, and you can at www.yahoogroups.com/groups/samhaincafe and subscribing to the loop. That reminds me, I've gotta go take myself off digest.

And at some point I'll be blogging at Beyond the Veil. When I get the post up. There is also a new review over at YA and Fantasy Bookspot

Have a good Sunday!

PS...

I finally got the grade back on my mid-semester Poetry paper from Lit. Crit. It was a Formalist criticism on a poem of my choice from the text. I chose Claude McKay's America, a modern day sonnet. I sweated that thing for almost two weeks.

Grade: 100%

ONE HUNDRED???? I don't remember the last time I got a 100 on a PAPER. 95, sure, but 100 means PERFECTION. The paper she returned had not a mark on it, except for one or two comments, all of which were encouraging.

I am so getting an A in that class. GO ME!

Despite reports to the contrary, I'm still alive

Testing is OVER! What a long week! And they tried to get me to work tomorrow too, but I said NO WAY. Stuff is piling up around here, and I need a breather. Somewhere in the middle, I got three files to copyedit from Seven Seas - final proofs before the next batch of Light Novels go out. So I download them to a flash drive and take them to work, figuring I can look them over on my downtime...

And then I found out that the tech guys at school deleted all the flash drive drivers. From every computer in the school, except ONE that I discovered in the library that still worked. Which was good, except that I couldn't work anywhere else, like Internal Suspension. Ack!

Things I need to do - get some shopping done, study for exams, finish the proofing, catch up with book reviews on the Bookspot, and get ready for this weekend's book promos. Yes, on Sunday I will be blogging at Beyond the Veil, AND we're having a YA day at the Samhain Cafe loop. There will be excerpts, prizes, and all kinds of other cool stuff, all spotlighting the YA authors of Samhain Publishing. If you want to get in on the fun, subscribe to the loop at the link.

I'd also like to direct your attention to another new blog. YA Book Excerpts Only. This is in adjunct to the Yahoo group, which can be subscribed to at this link. I'll be posting some stuff up there at the blog soon. I hope. When I have five spare minutes.

I'd LOVE to show you the cover art for THE ANKH OF ISIS. I'd love to...but I can't. I've approved it, and the editor's approved it, but the art department and the publisher have to also approve it. I hope they do ( I see no reason why they wouldn't).

Because it ROCKS.

Lame, lame, lame
Yes, today was the lamest day in the history of lame days at work. I'm helping out for the NJ (pain-in-the)ASK testing for 7th and 8th grades this week, Mon-Thurs. I knew I would be covering classes for proctors.

First period - nothing
Second period - Internal suspension. One student
Third period - I actually did something and was ICS for 6th grade math.
(these first three periods were almost an hour long each, for testing)
Fifth - I was supposed to be in Band, but the teacher came back. So nothing
Fourth (not a typo; we switched those periods for some unknown reason) - the Drama class from Hades. Cycle classes stink, because most times the kids have no interest in the subject. I entertained them with a brief but suitably gory synopses of Oedipus Rex. The topic for the lesson included Greek drama. Hey, I know what 8th graders like.
Sixth - lunch. Whew, all this work. Boy am I beat.
Seventh- nothing
Eighth - Internal suspension again. Four students. Yay.
Ninth - nothing.

I have three more days of this. The best thing I can say about it is that they're paying me to do it. Nearly $100/day, to do basically nothing. I hide in the Library and check my e-mail and read. Could be worse.

But then I come home to July release cover art goodness. Nope, sorry, can't share yet. But it's freaking AWESOME !!!!

Bits and Bobs

*All three of my essays are done, at least in first draft. I await the verdict of the college writing center. Because I just don't have time or patience to revise, I'll let them make the suggestions and implement them. It's free editing/critiquing and it saves me oodles of time in the long run. Long live the Effective Writing Center!

*Why am I the only one who doesn't know what steampunk is? I had to look it up in Wikipedia. I get it now...and the outfits are fabulous. I must write something in this genre, and I must have some SP gear! Petticoats and tails!

*What does it say about me that I find myself watching Nick shows like Drake and Josh and ICarly with the boy creature and enjoying it? I mean, I can't stand Spongebob, and while Fairly Oddparents is funny, the novelty has worn off. Jimmy Neutron is still good. But these live-action shows suck me in. They're actually funny.

*I'm now fully integrated into the digital era. I've actually bought songs from Rhapsody for my mp3 player. I've made a playlist. Before now, I've just ripped from existing CD's.

Armageddon can't be far behind.  I say this because in the last week I've also a) grilled something (usually I'm not allowed to burn the flesh outdoors) and b) washed my car. I haven't washed my car myself in five years. I was pregnant the last time I washed a car, and it wasn't even the car I have now. Once I broke my leg, I couldn't physically do it without serious pain. Actually it makes me feel good that I can do it and not be in pain over it.

* I need to see The Forbidden Kingdom. Not for any pressing reason except that I need to have some visuals for the current Library of Athena book. I'm just not feeling the Ancient China yet. I need to do some research. Can I write tickets, popcorn, and soda off on my taxes if it's book research...?

Christine's buried under a pile of English essays, please leave a message at the beep...

I'm frantically trying to finish up my final paper for the semester. I had three essays to do, and two are finished. The last one MUST be done in the next day or two, because we're going to be out much of the weekend and they switched me from half-days Mon-Thurs next week to FULL days. So there will be no essay writing next week. The papers are due next Thurs. and Friday, so there's no slacking off.

I can't wait until this semester's over.

I just won a random drawing over at Young Adult Enchating Reviews MySpace - I get a copy of SAVING JULIET by Suzanne Selfors! I can't wait to read it. Of course, I'll review it over at the Bookspot when I'm through.

Nothing better than a day that contains free books.

And since I passed my Science exam, I'm celebrating by giving something away! But ONLY to members of my Yahoo loop. I'll be posting the contest on my loop later this afternoon. There's still time to sign up: http://yahoogroups.com/groups/christinenorris . I'll be giving away one of my contributor copies of Ballad of a Shinigami I, which is one of the Japanese Light Novels I did the English Adaptation for.

What? It's Friday already?
Wow, seems like five minutes ago I was posting about Monday. I was scheduled to work Wed. and Thurs., but also got called in last minute on Tues. Monday was Ry's kindergarten screening. I didn't see how he did, they took him into a different room, but he says he knew how to do everything he asked. We'll get the results in a week or two.

Last night I went to an author event at a library. It was fun, I talked to a lot of people, many librarians who would like me to come and speak, and sold one book to an adorable little girl. I hope she enjoys it. One of my fellow Samhain authors, Michelle Cary, dropped in to say hi. It was cool to finally meet one of the people who I "see" online all the time.

Today I took off so I could start on my final papers for the semester, because I know work is only going to get more busy, not less, and next weekend we'll be running like crazies. I also have to finish reading Othello and do all my school stuff for the week. I usually have it done before now, but I've been behind all week.

Oh, and I got my Middle School Science Praxis test score yesterday. You need a 145 in NJ to pass. I got...

173

I passed! I owe it all to this cool website that's really for kids but covered all the material. When I get a job, I am going to use it in class.

In celebration, there will be a super secret contest on my Yahoo group, where I will give something away. If you haven't joined yet, sign up at www.yahoogroups.com/groups/christinenorris.

So now I can officially start looking for a job as a Science teacher. I have prospects. Two of the places I interviewed for last month at the job fair had their budgets defeated, so that doesn't look good. But one didn't and they still have Jr. High Science up on their job board. So I e-mailed the principal, who I interviewed with, and told her I passed. I found other jobs too, but they're all up in the northern part of the state. Sigh. There was one other possibility, in the district I sub for, but that's up in the air, since the teacher's not sure if she's going to be able to retire. Not her fault, she was ready to retire, but there have been complications. We'll wait and see. I also have a friend at a local private school who told me to send her my resume, in case they have something open up.

Okay, off to write a paper about "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard". It really is a beautiful poem.

Quick Monday notes...
  • Today is Ry's kindergarten registration. I'm torn how I feel about this. Is he REALLY old enough for kindergarten already? Time, she is swift and relentless
  • My mid-semester essays for 17th and 18th century Brit Lit - 96! Professor is duly impressed by my mad essay writing skilz.
  • Need more ink for printer to print backs of cover flats for appearance on Thursday. Trip to Staples is required. Could be dangerous. I JUST NEED INK. I promise to stay away from the office supply section...but the binders look so pretty...
  • My Kind-of-Quarterly, when I remember to do it Newsletter is posted at my website. If you wanna get it by e-mail, sign up for my annoucement only Yahoo group on my homepage.

And finally, in some surprise goodness... I have a release date! The Ankh of Isis will be revealed to the world in e-book format on July 8, 2008! I now have a listing. Hopefully there will be cover art goodness to share soon!

Hey, lookee here!
Hey, you can now get the first Wizard Academies book on B&N.com. I know the listing says "Heart of Darkness, but the book says "Gathering of Enchantment" It's the right book.

You can get it on Amazon, too, if you really want to :). I know I said boycott Amazon, and I'm still not happy with them, but it's up to you, if you still wanna buy it there. It's a free country, after all :)

Who rocks?

ME!
Why do I rock? Because I totally aced my mid-semester paper. 95! It was a feminist critique of the character of Roxana from Mark Twain's Puddn'head Wilson (which was good, by the way). The prof loved the thesis, loved the writing (she RAVES about my writing) loved the way I picked the perfect quotes to back up my statements and use of my research material. I rocked that paper.

I freaking rule.

A bullet list for the week-end recap
  •  Worked the first three days of the week. None of the jobs were particularly difficult, and I even got in some writing while my 7th grade English class was taking a test.
  • Read Rasselas for my 17th/18th Century Brit. Lit class. Interesting piece. Also read Oedipus the King for my Lit Crit class. A quick read, thank goodness. This is the last module for the class, and I'm ready to be done this semester.
  • Edits, edits, edits. Whenever there was a moment or two to spare. Almost through - I told you there weren't a lot of notes. The manuscript was pretty tight to begin with. Much better than Crown was, which I had already figured since I felt Ankh was better. I still like the story, so it must be good! LOL. I'm excited for the release, and reading it gives me a connection to the characters that I think I lost a little bit. This will help get Mirror back on track.
  • Poetry paper. Ugh. Need to polish today and turn in.
  • Finished Search for the Red Dragon. I will do another post on it over the weekend, because I now have a professional crush on     [info]coppervale.  Totally. Not like a weird stalker thing, but a I'm-in-total-love-with-his-writing thing.
  • The Wonderful Aunt stopped by yesterday, and we trekked to the bookstore! Yay!
  • Many surprises - the local B&N now carries Samhain books, and the old CRM, who never returned my calls, is no longer there. This bodes well for booksignings.
  • Picked up A Curse Dark as Gold by  [info]elizabethcbunce, which I've been dying to read, and Goose Girl  by Shannon Hale. I might even get around to reading them soon! Will review on the new blog, which is no longer IBR, but will now be called YA and Fantasy Bookspot. I'm working on putting it together.
  • Must write two book reviews this weekend for the next edition of Tales of the Talisman.

That's what I've been up to all week. Only another three weeks and the semester is over. Then I can work the month of May in peace...at least until the summer session starts. Next week promises busy-ness, with Ry's kindergarten screening, and my appearance at the Franklin Township Library for Circle of Authors. I still have to book my hotel for the Maryland Faerie Festival in June.

Back to work. Have a nice weekend!

Do not disturb: editing in progress

Okay, so I now have the first round edits for The Ankh of Isis. I wasn't really nervous - I knew it was a pretty clean manuscript. There IS something I want to add to it, based on stuff I'm writing now, in book three, and my fantabulous editor Lindsey made a point of directing me to the very thing I wanted to deepen. There's more going on that I need to 'splain, or clarify at least, and now I have the chance.

This is why it's never a good idea to write a series book without being ten steps ahead of where you are. Once the book is out there, you can't go back. So you have to work with what you've got. I've got the chance to tweak, so the subsequent book can do what I want it to.

Did you catch all that?

Anyway, if you don't hear from me for a few days (or a week) that's what's going on. There's not NEARLY as many notes for this one as there was for the first,  and the editorial letter was not NEARLY as long. Which is a good thing. These edits need to be done before month's end in order to make the tentative July release date. If we don't, I won't be terribly upset, but I'd like to hit the mark if possible.

In the meantime, I have three more papers to write and four weeks left of semester to get them done. Actually four papers - but the poetry paper at least has a rough draft.

See you...sometime in the next month. I hope.

Time is being sucked away by work
This week has been nuts. The thing with Othello first. He's still improving, thank goodness, but not 100%. Hubby's still carting him up and down the steps. Last night he wanted to come to bed instead of laying on the living room floor, which means he's almost back to normal. That was Tuesday when he first had trouble. I worked Monday, and Wednesday, and Thursday. They wanted me to work today, but I HAVE to catch up on my schoolwork. Poetry paper due - ick. I need today and the weekend to form a coherent 1,250 word paper.

One school already snagged me for helping with their standardized tests at the end of the month - when my last papers are due, of course. But they're only half-days, so I'll be able to come home in the afternoon and be productive. I hope. Right after that will be exams, which are a whole other kettle of fish when your a distance learning student. And I think my next batch of book reviews are due soon.

In the rush of stuff, I've nearly forgotten to post about other things going on. Mostly that the first batch of books that I did the English Adaptations for are NOW IN STORES! I got my contributor copies last week - they're really cool. So if you like Manga or Japanese Light Novels, head to the store and check out Pita-Ten 1, Ballad of a Shinigami, and Strawberry Panic. I don't get royalties from them - it was contract work - but my name is still in the inside cover ^_^. I'm really waiting for Gun Princess to come out - I think it was my favorite series of the ones I worked on.

I also have two copies of each of the issued ones. I don't NEED two...so maybe the extras will find their way into a prize bucket...

***

I've been writing...sort of. I was having some issues with the MC, remember? Well I broke my own rule about writing the first draft all the way through and I've been revisiting the beginning. I've added some bits for coherence and depth, but more importantly reminding myself of what I've already done. I started this book last year, remember, and then put it aside to work on Sorcerer. So my memory needed a bit of a jog. I'm finding that some of the things I discovered when I did my character arc I had already planted the seeds of, and other things that have come about or will come about grew out of those bits. When it's done it will be different - this book is pivotal to the series. After this it's all downhill. Much the same way Order of the Phoenix was pivotal. Only not as dark - I don't think. It might turn out darker than I think it will.

At some point I'll have the edits to Ankh. It's not Lindsey's fault, just the way things go sometimes. We'll get the book done and out there, even if it has to be a little later than we thought. In publishing, these things happen. No biggie.

***
Tattoo again. Okay, I haven't been able to find an image of exactly what I want, but I know what I want, if that makes any sense. I want a feather quill and an inkpot. Not a peacock feather, not too frou-frou, but not to austere either. Not flashy, but definitely ME. Reflective of writing, but not limited to fantasy, although I think I'd like some sort of magic-y thing around the quill. Because writing IS its own brand of magic.
